The good folks at the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation (in conjunction with corporate sponsor FEDEX) have been distributing free Christmas trees to military families in need this month.
Although most trees have been given out already, you can check if your base is on the list of recipients using the online map on the Trees for Troops website. (The map says "2008" but the same bases are participating now in 2011 and presumably next year in 2012.)
For further details about how the program operates on your base and how trees are distributed, check with the MWR department.
Also, for those who wish to help donate trees, you can contribute to the Trees for Troops program by donating through the website or via text message.
The instructions for how to make a donation via text (excerpted directly from the Trees for Troops website) are:
Text TREE to 50555 to make a $10 mobile donation.*
*Charges will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance. Message and Data Rates May Apply. Text STOP to 50555 to STOP. Text HELP to 50555 for HELP. Full Terms: www.mGive.org/T.
