A pal of mine alerted me to this exciting charitable foundation that helps veterans with anxiety and PTSD obtain Psychiatric Service Dogs which are in turn rescued from shelters: Veteran's Best Friend
Multiple studies have shown that having a close relationship with a pet can help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression (not just for veterans but for many different categories of people) plus promote general health and longevity.
Also, shelter pets make awesome companions--many of them are homeless not because they are defective in any way but just because their owners had some tough times and had to give them up. One fourth of all shelter dogs are purebreds.
This wonderful group helps two populations (one human, one animal) at once, so we are especially excited we found out about this charity this month!
